Our Daily Bread designs February New Release Blog Hop!

For my sample today, I wanted to do something a bit different, so I created a shaker card. Since the theme this month is all about the sea, I chose Spellbinders Big Scalloped Ovals for my shaker to match the scallops on the seashell designer paper.

To create a shaker, you will need either a sheet of clear acetate, or you could recycle any clear plastic packaging. I am using one of the plastic sheets from an ODBD stamp package, since I store my sets in clear DVD cases. I taped the die to the plastic sheet and ran through the Grand Calibur to cut the shaped window.



To create the top frame of the shaker, the same sized die was used with teal cardstock, then the next smallest die was lined up on top of the cut piece, taped in place, and ran through the Grand Calibur.


The white oval you see will be the bottom of the shaker, on which a scripture will be stamped. All three of these pieces are the same size, cut with the same die.



If you choose to stamp your bottom piece, do it now, before you add the foam tape. I used a scripture stamp from one of the new ODBD sets, "The Sea", then sprayed it several times with "Pearl" Glimmer Mist. I then cut tiny pieces of foam tape to line around the outside edge of the bottom piece, two layers high (so that the beads will be able to move). **Trial and error tip#1: Next time I would use a smaller die on the inside to cut the opening so that my foam tape doesn't have to be cut so small. **Trial and error tip#2: if you would like to make a shaker for yourself, I would suggest making a square frame (or a more plain shape) so that the foam tape will be easier to handle....much less work!


Before you fill your shaker, I would suggest adhering it to your project first so that it is stable. I used Scor-tape on the back and adhered it to my card. I glued the pearls inside, rather than using the adhesive dots which are already on the back of the pearls....in case there was any residue, I didn't want the beads to stick to the pearls!



Next, I filled the shaker with blue, green, and white beads. I then peeled off the paper from the foam tape strips.



The clear plastic oval was carefully lined up and pressed onto the foam tape adhesive strips.



On the back of the "frame", I cut little pieces of Scor-tape to make sure that the frame would stay adhered to the plastic shaker cover.



Here is the finished card! Hope you try one for yourself! There are so many variations......you can use Flower Soft, dew drops, bird seed, sand, or anything you like on the inside.
